Martin Quiazon  > Photography > Olympus XA
I was wondering if I was missing anything by not shooting film, so I bought an Olympus XA to find out.

Martin Quiazon > I started with a roll of C41-process black and white 400 speed film. Not bad for a handheld shot in relatively dim indoor lighting.
Martin Quiazon > I was a bit surprised at how shallow the depth of field could get, given the wide angle lens and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. If you look at the large version, you'll see that Jonathan is just very slightly out of focus.
Martin Quiazon > A lot of detail in the original, even unsharpened.
Martin Quiazon > Guadalupe River Park, Nov 2006. A little softer than I'd like, I still need practice with the XA's tiny rangefinder focusing patch.
Martin Quiazon > By far my favorite shot of the day. The camera's metering was spot-on.

I'd forgotten how fun it could be, not knowing how the shots turned out until I got the prints back.
Martin Quiazon > I'm pretty sure that's lens flare in the upper-left. Must remember not to shoot into the direction of the sun.

Martin Quiazon > The Millbrae intermodal station. Kodak 400 print film; the grain at 100% is much more noticeable than noise in my DSLR.
Martin Quiazon > Guadalupe River Park, Fuji Superia 400. The color is just amazing, and puts the Kodak equivalent to shame.
